(This article was first posted a few days after the September 11, 2001 attacks.  It has been updated a few times since then.)

The Rev. Jerry Falwell has been mocked and ridiculed by numerous commentators for saying what's being said in many churches around the country.  He suggested that the terrorist attacks that America experienced may be a chastisement from God on this country because of our increasing wickedness.  I'm sure that many pastors across this nation also believe that the recent damage done by hurricane Katrina was also a chastisement from God against not only those areas, but the nation as a whole.  New Orleans, for instance, is arguably the sexual imagery and decadence capital of the United States with its annual Marti Gras events.  They also get much of their tax revenue from gambling, a practice that God has warned us is sinful and spiritually destructive.  

This is not a popular message with many Americans who are in a state of rebellion towards God, but it very well may be the truth.  There is also another aspect of this issue that many people often overlook.  The suffering that God endures as a result of the wickedness of this nation is something we rarely think about because we're so focused on ourselves.  These issues and whether or not Rev. Falwell's comments were insensitive will be addressed in the paragraphs that follow.
